A History Like No Other

Founded in 1539, the Roodee is the oldest racecourse in Britain – steeped in over 480 years of racing tradition. From royal visits to legendary horses, every corner tells a story. It’s one of the few racecourses in the world built on land once owned by a medieval abbey, with the iconic "Roodee Cross" marking the site of an ancient shrine.

Where City Meets Country

Set on a beautiful meadow beside the River Dee, the course offers unbeatable views of Chester’s historic city walls, cathedral spire and water meadows. The unique triangular track winds along the riverbank – making it one of the most picturesque racing venues in the UK. Perfect for sunset walks before or after a day at the races.

World-Class Competition

Hosts some of the UK’s most prestigious flat races, including the famous Chester Cup (first run in 1824), the Chester Vase and the Ormonde Stakes. Top jockeys, trainers and thoroughbreds from around the world compete here – giving you front-row seats to elite racing. Many races also act as key trials for the Royal Ascot meeting.

Racing at Chester is designed for everyone – under-18s get free entry to most meetings, with dedicated kids’ zones featuring face painting, bouncy castles and pony rides. The course is fully accessible, with viewing areas, facilities and transport links to suit all guests – aligning perfectly with our own focus on inclusive experiences.

On-site food stalls and bars showcase the best of local produce – from Chester Market pies and sausages to ales from nearby breweries. The racecourse works closely with Chester’s independent businesses, and many meetings support local charities through fundraising initiatives. We partner with them to include race-day picnic packs with local treats in our stay packages.
